Audiobooks can help engage students at all different stages of their journey as readers and can build fluency, comprehension, and focus.
Highly effective instructional practice, including constructive student engagement, norms or rules, routines are guidelines for students in lieu of a formal behavior modification plan. It is my experience that my students are very engaged from the time they come into the building and the classroom. They put their coats away and enter their designated group spots or individual tables. They are ready to start the day after having been in the cafeteria upon arrival from the buses. Once in the classroom, students find their seats awaiting announcements and the pledge and begin morning routines followed by calendar songs. This is followed by organizing their boxes of educational materials and other relevant supplies from their backpacks at their desks. We begin instruction by talking about the calendar with physical and visual aids. Interspersed with videos and singing, we talk about the days of the week, the date and also the weather. The calendar provides a unique opportunity for understanding concepts such as yesterday, today and tomorrow, past, present and future, in addition to numerical relationships and sequencing. I check in and observe the responses so I can engage each student individually, also regarding their experience of and feelings about the weather. I also use this morning routine for educational informal assessments regarding where they are in their language development as they are starting to practice their receptive, expressive and pragmatic verbal language skills. Sometimes this morning meeting/routine may take ten minutes, or sometimes it can take over a half hour to engage each child, depending on their needs, interest and the enthusiasm of my students.
